Learn to love ourselves

It's Hard to be humble; Muppet version

I am basically a spiritual person and have studied both Eastern and Western religions. What most religions seem to agree on is the need for humility. Christianity teaches this while religions like Buddhism and Hinduism go even further and claim we have to be completely egoless.

I have followed this teaching for many years that to be ‘enlightened’ you have to overcome your ego. But I began to noticed that many of the gurus you get in the New-Age movement or Eastern Religions who claim to be completely without ego, were the most egocentric people you could possibly have. Some of whom expected their followers to worship them like gods.

It is an unfortunate fact that all the major religions of the world have been hi-jacked by politicians who only use religions to gain personal power. And I believe this is why most religions teach humility. When people are very humble they are far easier to control by the political leaders, than people who love and care for themselves.

The fact is that if you have a person who loves others, but doesn’t love themselves, then you end up with a doormat. Equally if you have a person who only loves themselves and hates others, then you end up with a egomaniac. But surely for anyone to be a balanced person it is important that we learn how to love both ourselves and to love others.

This is why I like the following song by Mac Davis, he unashamedly loves himself and that is not a bad thing, because he also loves others.

"It's Hard to be Humble"

Mac Davis

Oh Lord it's hard to be humble

When you're perfect in every way

I can't wait to look in the mirror

Cuz I get better looking each day.

To know me is to love me

I must be a hell of a man

O Lord it's hard to be humble

But I'm doing the best that I can.

I agree with what you say there, William, and have noted the massive egos of those who say to have none!

Hi Bard thanks for your support.

I did get a message on this hub saying; "NOTE: A substantial portion of the content on this hub appears on other sites"

I know it was only a robot that said this, but it pissed me right off and i don't think i will bother to make any hub-pages again.

Well wabond, that might be due to the lyrics you have posted. The robot didn't consider it original content, and thus you received that error.

Maybe you could just remove it and place a link to a site with the lyrics instead :)

Major religions of the world are labeled Christendom. I heard a talk given by Nathan H Knorr President then of the Watchtower Bible and tract Society 47 years ago; the theme: “Christendom, or Christianity, which one is the light of the world?”

The answer is obvious, and you mentioned it in your post—Christendom has been hi-jacked by politicians, and this is labeled spiritual adultery. The clergy of Christendom who use religion to gain personal power is also labeled as friendship with the world. Is that humility, whoever wants to be friends with the world is making himself an enemy with God. (James 4:4)

You are correct in your post that I linked with mine, because Christendom’s adultery makes laity and subjects easier to control by the political leaders.

Thank you for the podcast; regards: jghn
